Promo abuse in casinos and sportsbooks

Promo abuse in casinos and sportsbooks is exploiting any promotion against its terms: referral rewards, free spins, free bets, reload and cashback offers, not just the welcome bonus. Bonus abuse is the best-known kind; promo abuse is the wider family.

Which promotions get abused, and how

PromotionTypical abuse
No-deposit bonus, free spinsNew accounts opened only to claim it again
Free bet on sign-upBoth sides of a market backed from different accounts, so one wins whatever happens
Refer a friendThe "friend" is the referrer's own second account
Reload and cashbackAccounts working together to collect rebates on losses that cancel out
Tournaments and leaderboardsSeveral entries steered by one player

Notice the common thread: almost every row needs more than one account. Stop the extra accounts and most promo abuse has nothing to work with.

Why the referral offer is the soft spot

Referral rewards pay out twice, to the referrer and to the new player, and the new player is often only asked for an email address. A referrer who can mint addresses can refer themselves as often as they like. Offers that need no deposit or let a player withdraw quickly carry the same exposure.

Controls that don't punish real customers

  • Check the new account at registration, before the reward is credited, not at withdrawal.
  • Release referral rewards only once the referred player is screened and active.
  • Send unclear sign-ups to a review queue rather than closing them.

InlineShield fits the first step. Each sign-up gets a verdict and a recommended action: allow, allow_no_bonus, review, require_kyc after an approved hold, or block. Your promotion engine can credit the reward only on allow, and your reviewers handle the rest from the queue, with signed signup.approved and signup.rejected webhooks back to your server. Frequently asked questions

Is promo abuse the same as bonus abuse?

Bonus abuse is the part of promo abuse that targets bonuses. Promo abuse also covers referral, tournament and cashback schemes.

Should I stop running referral offers?

No. Pay the reward after the new account has been screened and has played, and most of the exposure goes away.

How do I spot self-referrals?

Compare the inbox, not the spelling. The free Gmail alias checker shows when two addresses share one inbox, and the disposable email checker catches throwaways.
