What is multi-accounting in online gambling?
Multi-accounting is one player holding more than one account at the same casino or sportsbook, against the operator's one-account-per-person rule. Players do it to claim the same offer again, to get round stake limits or self-imposed restrictions, or to bet against themselves.

How players open the extra accounts
The second account rarely uses a new identity. It uses a new string: another email address, a slightly different spelling of the name, a different device or network. The email address is the cheapest thing to vary, so it is where most multi-accounting shows first:
- Alias spellings of one inbox.
[email protected],[email protected]and[email protected]all deliver to the same mailbox. - Throwaway inboxes. A temp-mail address takes seconds to create and is gone an hour later.
- A different network. A VPN or mobile hotspot so the accounts don't share an IP address.
When the extra accounts carry other people's real identities, the practice is called gnoming.
Why "is this email already registered?" isn't enough
Most registration forms reject an email address that already exists, and that check compares strings. To a database, [email protected] and [email protected] are different, so the duplicate goes through. The fix is to compare the inbox, not the spelling.
How InlineShield catches it
For every sign-up, InlineShield works out the canonical inbox, using each provider's own rules: dots and plus tags for Gmail, plus tags for Outlook and iCloud, for example. It then compares that inbox with earlier sign-ups at your site only. A match is held for review with the trigger DUPLICATE_INBOX_ALIAS, so your team sees which account it repeats. VPN, datacenter and time-zone signals add to the picture, and the review queue and signed webhooks let you act on it. See Gmail alias detection and multi-accounting detection for sportsbooks.
Frequently asked questions
Is having two accounts always abuse?
Not always. People forget passwords and register again. That is why a repeat inbox is held for review rather than blocked: your team decides.
Do you compare my players with other operators' players?
No. Repeat inboxes are matched per client, against your own sign-ups only.
Can I see the inbox behind an alias myself?
Yes, with the free Gmail alias checker. It runs in your browser.
